Business is Personal
“It’s not personal, it’s business.” As the saying goes. We’ve all heard this before. That’s it’s nothing to do with you. Nothing you did, nothing you could have changed for a better outcome.
That’s bu****it. Business is personal. The foundation of business is relationships, it’s everything. And any relationship that is not personal is shallow and surface level which benefits no one.
You want to do business with people you like, that you can trust, that have your back when you’re not there, who will tell you the truth when you need to hear it. Someone who won't be a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ partner, but a real one. That’s who you want to surround yourself with. Real people doing real things making real change. It’s infectious!
I used to believe that personal and business were not mutually exclusive. Because all everyone says, “It’s not personal, it’s business.” You hear in movies, tv shows, when someone is about to get fired, when the boss/board/CEO back you 100% and then go in a different direction. That’s the belief I had. Until I broke that belief.
By questioning it. By putting it up to the test. “Is this really true? Or can things be different.”
They can.
“We question all our beliefs, except for the ones that we really believe in, and those we never think to question.” - Orson Scott Card
I believe business is personal, you care more about your clients, future prospects, the people you work with, operations and everything else that falls under a business. You start to enjoy your craft a lot more. You become obsessed.
When you find someone/s with the same underlying values as you, it becomes more of a joy to work with them and you want to go to work, you look forward to Mondays, and sometimes you feel a little down because work is over, you don’t want it to end. You’re having so much fun.
This is possible.
Engineer your life in such a way that it would be advantageous to have all these things, personal and business, in harmony. Adhering to your values. Enjoying the work and building something you love. Seeing people you like. Creating something long-term with long-term people.
Until next time,
Brody
