Be Your Own Best Friend

You have to look out for yourself. You have to have your own back. No one cares about you as much as you do. When was the last time someone was excited about something you were excited about? It’s most likely a long time ago or never happened at all. Friends and family will be there for you, brother in arms will be there when you call them, but they also have their own lives to worry about. They come first in their minds and need to do what is best for them.

This can feel disheartening, that the reality of life is lonely, everyone is really out for and only cares about themselves, and the only person we can truly rely on is ourselves. This is far from the truth.

Reality is neutral, it is neither for nor against us, it’s not out to get us. It is what it is. It’s how we respond to reality and our perception and what we do about it. We can sit in the corner of a dark quiet room and cry ourselves to sleep, thinking the world has targeted us. Or we can work with what the world has given us and not fall into the trap of victimhood and victim mentality. Work with what you have rather than what you don’t.

It is true… no one will have our back as much as ourselves, but there is great realisation in that. You have the power and control to make life what you want it to be and not to wait for other people. Placing expectations on others is a one-stop shop for disappointment, anger frustration, resentment etc.

Treat yourself like you would treat your best friend in the entire world.

Think…

How would I speak to them?

How would I encourage them?

How would I tell them the truth?

How would I set boundaries?

How would I show my appreciation towards them?

What would I get them as a gift?

By asking yourself these questions and many others like them, you open your mind to the possibilities of what you can do with yourself. And yes… people are scared to go out on their own for fear of looking like a loner and loser. And?…

You’re only doing yourself harm by putting the opinions of strangers… you’ve never met… into your own mind and torturing yourself. Would you torture your best friend by projecting wrong opinions that would make them feel horrible about themselves? No. So why are you doing it to yourself?

Take yourself out for dinner.

Take yourself out to the movies.

Out for ice cream

Out for a hike

On a long walk

A weekend getaway

To the beach

A retreat.

The opportunities are endless when you start to explore ideas.

No one is going to treat you as well as you would treat yourself, ever. Be your own best friend.

Until next time,

Brody
